Z-value is simply a percentage of the standard-deviation away from the center.

xμ calculates distance from the center. x - \mu \text{ calculates distance from the center. }

Then we can see the percentage of this distance is from the standard-deviation ( the mean distance from the mean value ) to have.

z=xμσz = \frac{x-\mu}{\sigma}
