Usually for collisons that happen in a brief time, this small amount of time is not enough for external forces to make any influenctial difference to the momentums etc... Therefore, can be ignored.

Elastic Collisions: Kinetic Energy is conserved.

Inelastic Collisions: Kinetic Energy is not conserved.

• Note that even when the kinetic energy is not conserved, the total energy will be conserved.
